Geocaching

A new game is in town, called Geocaching. Geocaching is an outdoor "treasure-hunting" game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to hide and seek caches that are hidden on certain Kansas Wildlife & Parks lands. Geocaching has been around for a while and is becoming very popular as another thing to do in the outdoors. Kansas Wildlife & Parks has started to put caches on each of the State Parks and some of the Public Lands for people to hunt.

This year the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks is sponsoring the 2nd annual Geocaching Contest.

Participant Guidelines (printed on the back of the entry form)

  1. Kansas Wildlife & Parks (KDWP) Statewide Geocaching contest has 31 official participating locations that will each have two geocaches. They will be marked First Geocache and Second Geocache. ( Any other caches will not be in the statewide contest).
  2. The coordinates of first cache site for each official location will be posted on the KDWP Geocache website. Only after a cacher finds and opens the first cache, and signs and dates the log sheet, will they be able to find the coordinates of the second cache site.
  3. Upon finding and opening the second cache site, the participant will sign and date a log sheet and take a cache site certificate ( proof of finding cache) and personally turn it in to that cache site’s office where they will receive a location site-specific “I found the Geocache” ink pen, and the official statewide KDWP Geocaching entry form with instructions on the back. Entry forms will only become validated at the site office by stamping it with the office’s inked check stamp, for each second cache found.

Please Do Not give anyone the coordinates of any second geocaches because it may jeopardize your contest!

  1. Geocachers can mail in their completed and validated forms anytime during the contest, but final deadline is November 1, 2009. All forms must be mailed to ATTN: Geocache, KDWP Pratt Office, 512 SE 25th Ave, Pratt, KS 67124, and received by deadline date to qualify for statewide contest prizes.
  2. Prizes will be limited to ONE WINNER PER HOUSEHOLD.
  • First Place Prizes will be awarded to up to 50 geocachers who earn ALL OF THE 31 POINTS and who are first to mail their forms to the Pratt office. Cachers who earn ALL points but who mail their forms after the first 50 will automatically roll down to the second-place prize category. First-place prizes (50 winners) are a choice between a two-night stay in a Wildlife & Parks camping cabin, or one annual camping permit for 2010.
  • Second Place Prizes will be awarded to up to 100 geocachers who earn 18-31 points and who are first to mail their forms to the Pratt office. Those who earn 18-31 points but who mail their forms in after the first 100 qualifiers for second-place prizes will roll down to the third-place category. Second-place prizes (100 winners) will be a choice between a one-night stay in a camping cabin or a 14-day camping permit for 2010.
  • Third Place Prizes will be awarded to up to 200 geocachers who earn 5-17 points and who are first to mail their forms to the Pratt office. Third place prizes (200 winners) will be two nights free camping and utilities at any Kansas state park during 2010.
